new revised laundry soap

When i ran out of powder soap i decided to make liquid. Its actually much faster and makes tons more. .....

1/2 bar fels naptha soap bar
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda

chop up the soap bar by knife or grate it with a cheese grater. Add to 6 cups water and heat on stove til melted. Add borax and washing soda. Stir til dissolved. Pour into a 2 or 3 gallon bucket. Add 1-1/2 gallons hot water. Stir well. Let sit 24 hours before using.
Add 1/2 cup to each load.

*This is low/no sudsing so its safe to use in front load machines.

My journey to being Greener/Saving money

Well, Im pretty proud of myself. I started out 2010 with the goal to become even more greener/live cheaper then we did in 09. So far I think Im doing pretty good.
In 2009 we. . .
1. Used Cloth diapers on Kianna instead of disposables
2. Nurse instead of Formula for Kianna
3. Started recycling thus cutting back on our trash because we have to pay per bag to dump it
4. Made my own laundry soap.
5. Used Cloth Nursing pads instead of disposable

So far in '10 we . . . .
1. Switch to all natural cleaning supplies and make my own with Vinegar, essential oils and baking soda.
2. Started REMEMBERING to take my reusable grocery bags to the store with me.
3. Started using All natural shampoo and conditioner
4. Making my own baby food for Kianna
5. Using a all natural shampoo on the dogs instead of the nasty dog shampoo that smells!
6. Hanging Ki's Diapers and our jeans and sheets and blankets out on our porch rail to dry instead of using the dryer. (my clothes line is not strung with string so I cant use it.)

More Energy saving Changes coming to our house soon but i cant quite talk about it yet. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can tell!! ;-)
Im also thinking in the next few months of renewing my sams club card and buying in bulk. I figured it up and for about half of ours monthly items I buy I can get it in bulk twice a year and it will end up being $9 a month. Then i would have to just buy perishables and fruit and stuff every week at the store and should be under $40-$50 a month. So WAY cheaper grocery bill then it is now. Plus in the summer its always cheaper cause we get a ton from moms garden.

Housecleaner Recipes

I have been making my own cleaners for some time now and have finally found mixtures that work great after much trial and error!

Scrubbing Powder
This works well to sprinkle on the tub, sinks, anywhere you need some grit!
1/2 cup Borax
1/2 cup Washing soda
1/2 cup Baking soda
mix well and store in a old parmesan cheese shaker. Sprinkle on tub, sink, wherever and scrub with a rag or brush. Rinse clean.

All purpose spray
1/2 Cup Vinegar
1 Cup water
few drops essential oil
Mix all together in a large spray bottle. Add whatever essential oils you like. Tea Tree oil is a disinfectant so add that if you need to disinfect.
Shake before using each time.

Dusting Spray
1/4 Cup Olive oil
1 Cup Vinegar

Mix together and store in a spray bottle. Shake well before each use as the olive oil seperates. You can add lemon essential oil to make it smell more like dusting spray if you want.

Laundry Soap
1 Cup Borax
1 Cup Washing soda
1/2 Bar of Fels Naptha soap
Grate soap bar. In a big pot heat 6 cups water and add grated soap. Once melted add the borax and soda. Mix until all dissolved. In a big 3 gallon bucket put 4 cups hot water. Add soap mix. Then add 1-1/2 gallons of hot water. Stir until mixed well.
Let sit for 24 hours before using. This will be a gel like. Add 1/2 cup to each load.

For fabric softener simply add 1/4 cup vinegar to the wash at the rinse cycle or in the softner spot if you have one.

Im still trying to find a Windex recipe I like, until then i am still using windex because honestly I use so very little that 1- It isnt enough toxins to hurt and 2- I am still using the same bottle we got right before we got married. So its not that costly for us.

I Also am still using store bought dish soap because I havent been able to find a natural dish soap recipe that works and doesnt leave a film. Plus dish soap is cheap so its not a big concern to me.
